Internet Access
The USS Wisconsin Radio Club has taken an important step forward by establishing reliable Internet access for station N4WIS aboard the historic battleship USS Wisconsin. Using a purpose-built wireless link, club members successfully connected the shipboard radio station to the wider world—no small achievement within the steel structure of a World War II–era warship.
This new connectivity is a true game-changer. Internet access enables capabilities that were previously impractical or impossible, allowing N4WIS to operate as a modern, fully integrated amateur radio station while remaining faithful to its historic setting. From real-time propagation monitoring and digital operating modes to remote data services and educational demonstrations, the wireless link opens the door to a range of new technical and outreach projects.
The sections below describe how this connection enhances on-air operations, supports experimentation and learning, and helps the club better engage visitors by connecting today’s amateur radio technologies with the legacy of maritime communications aboard the USS Wisconsin.
